Freedom

$100.00

print of gouache and Ink on paper and mylar, 18”x24”, 2020.

This piece is from Sandara’s Music Paintings series of abstract expressionist paintings which explore translations of music to visuals. Different songs and sounds connect to different levels of emotion; and even in reiteration, brings about new experiences. A song listened to the first time, does not create the exact same experience the second listen. Individual memories of songs change. This creates a large variety of shapes, strokes and color in the paintings.

They are made while listening to a continuous playlist of a variety of music genres. The synesthetic process brings out an action-oriented, stream-of-subconscious way of working. Audience interpretation of the works have become more valuable than subjectively stating what exact songs or genres were listened to. The goal of these works are for the artist’s subconscious mark-making to interact with the viewer’s subconscious interpretations, encouraging a bond that is both connecting yet entirely personal.

As an artist I’m interested in LGBTQ+ topics, the Secret War in Laos, stream of consciousness work and personally I like looking into a lot in childhood nostalgia in the 90s too. I work in gouache, watercolor, ink and acrylic. Sometimes I also collage and make abstract paintings inspired by music.
